Judit Sànchez Velasco

Judit Sánchez Velasco is an Artist and Environmentalist born in Barcelona.

Defined by a research-based, exploratory and interdisciplinary approach, Judit’s artistic process involves fieldwork in remote locations where she investigates notions of transition and belonging in the context of the shifting biophysical world and the global climate injustice.

Judit has attended Nes Artist Residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland, Kala Khoj Artist Residency in the experimental evolving township of Auroville, India, and has participated in the artist-led research expedition La Wayaka Current in the Indigenous Province of Guna Yala, Central America. The artist’s first solo show Capitalocenoin Barcelona, Spain, displays her latest works in the study of the endangered Darién jungle on the border of Panama and Colombia, the geothermal zone of Hverir in Iceland, and the Caledonian Forest in the Scottish Highlands.

“The Glasgow School of Art acted as a catalyst for stimulating my critical thinking and artistic creation, which would materialise in constant experimentation and fluidity throughout my Masters. This enabled me not only to achieve a great level of self-awareness and to find my artistic voice but also to deepen both, my environmental concern and line of research. Primarily, I’d say that the greatest value of my studies was to be encouraged to push any given boundary.”

Judit Sánchez Velasco es una artista y ambientalista nacida en Barcelona.

Definido por un enfoque exploratorio e interdisciplinar fundamentado en la investigación, el proceso artístico de Judit implica trabajo de campo en lugares remotos donde investiga nociones de transición y pertenencia en el contexto del mundo biofísico cambiante y la injusticia climática global.

Judit ha sido artista residente en Nes Artist Residency en Skagaströnd, Islandia, Kala Khoj Artist Residency en el municipio experimental de Auroville, India, y ha participado en la expedición de investigación La Wayaka Current en la provincia indígena de Guna Yala, Centroamérica. La primera exposición solista de la artista, Capitaloceno, en Barcelona, España, reúne obras que parten del estudio de la selva del Darién en la frontera de Panamá y Colombia, la zona geotérmica de Hverir en Islandia, y el bosque Caledonio en Tierras Altas de Escocia.

“La Glasgow School of Art actuó como catalizadora en la estimulación de mi pensamiento crítico y creación artística, que se materializaría en una constante experimentación y fluidez a lo largo de mi máster. Esto me permitió no solo alcanzar un gran nivel de auto-conciencia y encontrar mi voz artística, sino también profundizar en mi preocupación medioambiental y mi línea de investigación. Principalmente, diría que el mayor valor de mis estudios fue alentarme a desafiar cualquier límite”.
